Mathematical Models for Musical Performance
نویسندگان
چکیده
The aim of this article is twofold. On one hand we give an overview, without any pretension of being exhaustive, of some theoretical tool of the modern theory of musical performance. On the other hand we present two mathematical models based on the ideas of Mazzola’s Mathematical Music Theory, that enable to concretely answer typical question on the way a player performs. For instance, now a claim like ”Horowitz has a more local way than Cortot to play Schumann’s ’Träumerei’” has a strong statistical support.

The musical language Elements of Persian musical language: modes, rhythm and syntax
In treating the subject of musical language, a Persian musician would be intrinsically drawn to the structural similarities between the Persian music and language. Indeed Persian music and language are extremely related in their metrics, intonations and structural phrases (syntax). Although we will draw upon this relationship, our aim in this article is to present “music as a language,” c...
متن کاملMathematical Music Theory — Status Quo 2000
We give an overview of mathematical music theory as it has been developed in the past twenty years. The present theory includes a formal language for musical and musicological objects and relations. This language is built upon topos theory and its logic. Various models of musical phenomena have been developed. They include harmony (function theory, cadences, and modulations), classical counterp...
متن کاملStructural Communication: Timing and Dynamics
The communication of structure in musical expression has been studied scientifically by analyzing variations in timing and dynamics in expert performances, and by analysis by synthesis. The underlying principles have been extracted, and models of the relationship between expression and musical structure formulated. For example, a musical phrase tends to speed up and get louder at the start, and...
متن کاملClassification of Iranian traditional musical modes (DASTGÄH) with artificial neural network
The concept of Iranian traditional musical modes, namely DASTGÄH, is the basis for the traditional music system. The concept introduces seven DASTGÄHs. It is not an easy process to distinguish these modes and such practice is commonly performed by an experienced person in this field. Apparently, applying artificial intelligence to do such classification requires a combination of the basic infor...
